Macy is a rescued Australian Sheppard with moderate neurological deficits, as well as arthritis in both pelvic limbs. She absolutely hated the water when she came to us. George and Pat, her guardians, said she would go around puddles if she could.
It has taken a couple of sessions, but Macy sure loves the water now. Her swimming has improved so much that we call her Macy Phelps! On land she needs a sling to support her hind leg and uses a cart, but in the water she has full use of both back legs and does the most number of laps of any dog here.
The best part is that she seems to smile while she swims -- her body is working the way it used to, and for a dog that doesn’t really understand what’s happening that alone could make one smile!
