Spinner was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease in the summer of 2008. One of the possible side effects of this disease is the loss of muscle mass. Being that Spinner was an older dog, he was around 12 and half at that time. Loss of muscle was starting to show an effect on his movement.
His vet managed to get the Cushing’s under control. By the end of 2008 he had lost enough muscle that he was having problems walking any distance and using the stairs. It got to a point where I often had to carry him up the stairs because his back legs would give out. Even the neighbours had noticed that he was no longer enjoying his life. He was just dragging himself with his head down during his walks.
I had a discussion with the vet as Spinner was no longer enjoying his life and the vet suggested that I try hydrotherapy to see if that would help. Well Spinner had his first appointment in January 2009 and that was the best thing I could have done for him. Everyone noticed right away that after his first session his attitude had improved and he started enjoying his life again. After just a few sessions he was able to use the stairs again and he returned to his old self. I have been taking him weekly for a session ever since and I am currently in the pool with him which is a great bonding experience in itself. I really think that without the benefits of hydrotherapy Spinner would no longer be with me.
